Student Direct Stream expanded to Pakistan

July 29, 2019 nkic

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) is now available to study permit applicants who are living in Pakistan.

SDS applications require prospective students to provide more up-front information to officers, including meeting language test requirements in English or French and providing additional information that shows their ability to finance their education. With additional information, officers can process applications more efficiently.

The Student Direct Stream launched in 2018 as an option for study permit applicants in China, India, Philippines and Vietnam. Most SDS applications in those countries are being processed in under 3 weeks.

The expansion of SDS supports the Government’s goal of attracting students from a more diverse range of countries.

Many international students who graduate from a program in Canada often become eligible for a post-graduation work permit. With a Canadian education and skilled work experience in Canada, former international students are well positioned for success in applying for permanent residence through Express Entry, the Provincial Nominee Program or the Atlantic Immigration Pilot.

In 2018, in fact, nearly 54,000 former students transitioned to permanent residence, an all-time high.

The Mature Student Program is a route for mature/adult students to obtain permanent residency within 18-24 months.

Under this program, the principal applicant would come to Canada on a Student Visa, the spouse would obtain an Open Work Permit, and the family would move to Canada (children may attend public school in Canada for free from kindergarten to grade 12).

Once the principal applicant completes minimum 1-year of Canadian education, plus minimum 1-year of Canadian work experience, he/she can apply for Permanent Residence as a Skilled Worker, or under the Canadian Experience Class or PNP.

Grenada – Citizenship by Investment Program

July 29, 2019 nkic

Grenada has expanded the definition of a dependent to include the following:

  • age 18+ unmarried and childless siblings of the principal applicant and spouse (additional fees apply);
  • parents of the principal applicant or spouse, under age 55, who are fully dependent on the principal applicant and spouse (additional fees apply); and
  • babies born to the principal applicant and spouse within 1 year of citizenship issuance to the principal applicant.

As of April 1, 2019, two investors may share ownership of a unit in a Tourism Accommodation approved project, and invest USD $220,000 each (for a total investment of USD $440,000 in the unit).

Grenada is the only Caribbean country that allows citizenship to be passed along to investors’ future spouses and children.  There is no residency, language, education, or interview requirement, and both cash and real estate investment options are available.

Due to banking restrictions, citizens of Iran are no longer eligible to apply.

USA – EB5 Program

July 29, 2019 nkic

The following changes to EB5 have progressed through another stage of legislation, and are expected to become law soon:

  • the minimum investment level of USD $500,000 will increase to $1.35 million in Targeted Employment Areas (TEAs);
  • the minimum investment level of USD $1 million will increase to $1.8 million outside a TEA; and
  • the USCIS will determine TEA boundaries.

The effective date of the above changes is not yet known, but we expect it to be Sept. 30, 2019.  To lock-in cases under the existing pricing and program, please submit any pending EB5 cases to Confederation right away, work with our team to complete the documentation requirements quickly, and encourage your clients to transfer their funds as soon as possible.

We are pleased to announce our newest project: “The Mark” in Sarasota, Florida.  This project has already received I-924 Exemplar approval (pre-approval of the business plan, agreements, and job creation model), so that green card condition removal will be automatic.  Construction began in 2017 and is expected to be completed in late 2019, and the job creation requirement for all investors has already been met.  The project owner and developer, the Kolter Group, is a highly accomplished real estate developer based in West Palm Beach, Florida.  Kolter has developed over USD $10B in projects in the last 20 years.

Under EB5, there is no language requirement, no age limit, and no management experience requirement.  Applicants must have a net worth of minimum $1 million USD, and be able to document the source and path of funds for the investment and fees.

Refused Quebec and Canadian investor cases are welcome to apply to EB5.
